Michigan Rescue Conference

October 31, 1999

Are you an animal rescuer? Are you concerned about how to be more effective? Since 1994, the Michigan Purebred Dog Rescue Alliance has produced an annual conference in Ann Arbor. These conferences have taught many rescuers to be more professional, effective and less stressed. This years conference promises to be the best ever.

It's the event you won't want to miss! The Michigan Purebred Dog Rescue Conference returns with a full day of exciting speakers, stimulating workshops and not to be missed networking for everyone who works with homeless animals.

Learn to evaluate the temperaments of incoming dogs from acclaimed expert Sue Sternberg.

It's not just stress we're all experiencing, it's compassion fatigue, and national consultant Doug Fakkema will help us learn to handle it.

Plus adoption liability, mixed breed identification, dog to dog interactions, rural rescue, rescue coordination and motivating adopters. Don't delay! Register today! Contact the Michigan Purebred Dog Rescue Alliance for a registration form.

Sue Sternberg is a nationally acclaimed expert on dog behavior from Rondout Valley Kennels in Accord, New York. She owns and operates a private shelter for homeless dogs and presents workshops on temperament evaluation across the United States. Sue's down to earth speaking style and use of shelter dogs (generously provided by the Humane Society of Huron Valley) make her presentations especially practical for those who work directly with homeless dogs. All Conference participants will hear her presentation on "Temperament Evaluation of Incoming Dogs". Additional sessions addressing "Dog to Dog Interactions" and "Mixed Breed Identification" will be offered.

Cynthia Bostwick, JD has received top attendee ratings each of the three years she has spoken at the conference. This year Cynthia presents an analysis of animal adoption liability cases from around the country. This information will help any group that places animals in adoptive homes to develop sound adoption guidelines and procedures. Cynthia is a magistrate as well as an attorney in private practice in Port Huron, Michigan with a special interest in animal-related law and has a strong background in working with humane organizations.

Douglas Fakkema is a private consultant in the area of compassion fatigue in animal-related fields. He is located in South Carolina and travels throughout the United States teaching HSUS and American Humane Association certified courses in both compassion fatigue and euthanasia by injection. Doug's many years in animal sheltering give him insight into the unique kind of stress experienced by people who work in animal rescue. He will be giving a presentation to all attendees and will also offer two small workshops (25 participant limit) in the afternoon.

Bright Ideas from Rescues Three Michigan rescue groups will present their approaches to homeless dog fostering and placement.

    * George Cromer of the National English Bulldog Club of America will present "State and National Rescue Coordination".
    * Toni Hetherington of Rottweiler Rescue will discuss "Motivating Adopters to Obedience Train Rescue Dogs".
    * Ryan-Jo Hack of Heritage Collie Rescue will present "Effective Rescue in Rural Areas".

Our last conference had 225 attendees from six states and Canada. The longer lunch break and the optional HSUS certificate course on Monday will provide opportunities for meeting and sharing ideas with others active in homeless animal sheltering and rescue. Boards for posting job opportunities, upcoming events and messages will be available. Please join us at our "Howlin' Hospitality Suite" at Weber's Inn on Saturday and Sunday evenings.
